About Me

I am from New Jersey and this is my 5th year at ASU. I have absolutely loved my time here, but at the same time I am ready to leave Boone and get on with my life. Running has brought me to these mountains, and is also the reason that I remain here today. An injury that kept me from running all of last year has given me the opportunity to work on my masters and continue competitive running for one more year. I’m sure I’ll keep busy this year (I never seem to learn my lesson and always take on too much), this semester I’m a GA in the reading clinic, taking 4 classes, running cross country, and tutoring a middle school student in reading. As happy as I am to be here, I sometimes wish I could be in Charlotte with my fiance who I miss more than anything.

Teaching

I have very little teaching experience, but am very excited and looking forward to the day when I will have my very own classroom. I have worked for 4 summers as a teacher’s aid in a school in New Jersey for students with emotional and behavioral disorders, which is what originally sparked my interest in becoming a teacher. I completed my undergrad in special education and gained some experience in working with elementary, middle, and high school aged children… elementary was my favorite.

During undergrad I became very interested in reading. I had some amazing professors and I felt that my reading courses were the most informative and useful classes I completed in the special education program. I swore I wouldn’t stay here for five years, but here I am. I decided at the last minute to pursue a masters and because of the reading teachers I have had, and the impact they have had on me, I knew that I wanted it to be in reading.

Tutoring in the reading clinic has been one of my favorite experiences, and I hope to work with struggling readers when I begin my career.

Things I Like…

Running is one of my favorite things. It’s so relaxing and makes me feel good. When I can’t run I’m miserable and not very fun to be around.

When I’m home my Dad rides his bike with me on my runs, and these are some of my favorite times. When I’m not home I like to run alone, and I don’t think my teammates appreciate that.

I love my team, they’re like a family to me.

Racing is one of the greatest feelings ever. I love everything about it. The nerves, the strategy, the pain, the finish. I like running on the track best, and the feeling of winning is exceptionally wonderful

This is the finish of one of my best races ever.
The conference 1500 in 2007

Relay races are also fun. I raced across my home state of NJ in “River to Sea” in 2006, which is a 98 mile relay that starts at the river and ends in the ocean. I ran this race with a 2008 1500m Olympian on my team, and about 5 All-American runners… we won.

It makes me happy every time I get to see my boyfriend, Mike. He also ran for ASU, and I enjoy running with him…when he’s not injured. I miss having him as a teammate and being at all of my races. He graduated in 2007 and works in Charlotte now, so we spend a lot of time apart. We just got engaged in May :-)

I also have a dog who I LOVE.
(he’s not really mine though, I got him for Mike)
His name is Wallace, and he comes to visit me sometimes.

A few more things I like…

I live alone for the first time, and am very happy to not have roommates anymore, I’ve just had enough of them.

I like to clean a lot, and am a neat freak.

I like spending time alone.

Bright colors make me smile.

I enjoy hiking grandfather mountain, and anywhere else with my Dad

I love taking and looking at pictures, and making scrapbooks. I got the chance to go to Hawaii and Alaska in the past 2 summers and really enjoyed taking pictures of sunsets in both (although I had to stay up until 3am to get one in Alaska)

Finally, in the free time I never have I like to make things with clay. It’s fun and relaxing. I make pretty worthless things, but it’s fun :-)

Things I Dislike…

I really don’t like missing XC practice 3 days a week for class

I HATE being injured, and not being able to run. Cross training is not my friend, and i dislike swimming, aqua-jogging, elliptical exercise, and stationary biking

I’m not a big fan of 6:45 am core practice. They say it’s pilates, but entirely too many push-ups (which I can’t do) and painful ab exercises doesn’t count as pilates to me.

Athletic training rooms and doctors offices are the last place I want to be. I believe that once I go in, I never come out okay again. I hate stretching and rehab exercises, I’ve lost all confidence in them and believe they do nothing.

I don’t like living 100 miles away from my fiance, and not being able to visit him on weekends because of Sunday morning long runs.

Finally, I hate arguing. I will do almost anything to avoid arguments and confrontation.

I certainly enjoyed reading all about you Meghan! I am so excited for you, that you have the opportunity to run this year. You have a lot going on (like many of us) :) and I have a feeling the goal of achieving balance will be one with which you become familiar. Congratulations on your finish last Friday; first meets of the year are never “fun” but you looked strong. It is only up from here :)

Also, I am so intrigued by the clay figures! If you ever create a bicycle, I would love to see it and hold it! :)
